China stretches across East Asia from the Pacific coast to high plateaus and mountain ranges in the west. The Himalayas rise along its southwestern edge, while the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts occupy parts of the north and northwest. The Yangtze and Yellow rivers cross broad plains and basins, and the country’s landscapes also include karst hills, subtropical forests, grasslands, and a long eastern coastline.
