Israel lies along the eastern Mediterranean, where a narrow coastal plain rises into hills and uplands farther inland. The landscape changes quickly from the green slopes of Mount Carmel and the valleys of the north to the dry Negev in the south. Its best-known natural features include the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, and the steep cliffs and erosion craters of the desert.
