India stretches across South Asia, from the Himalayas in the north to a broad peninsula between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges and Brahmaputra plains spread below the mountains, while the Thar Desert lies to the west and the Deccan Plateau covers much of the southern interior. Its landscapes also include the Western Ghats, tropical forests, long coastlines, and island groups off both sides of the peninsula.
