Jordan lies in Western Asia, where dry plateaus and desert landscapes cover much of the country. The Jordan Rift Valley drops sharply in the west, reaching the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest exposed land on Earth, while Wadi Rum is shaped by sandstone mountains and broad valleys. Farther south, a short coastline at Aqaba opens onto the Red Sea.
