Maldives

The Maldives lies in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka, where a chain of low coral islands stretches across 26 natural atolls. Ring-shaped reefs enclose shallow lagoons, while narrow channels connect them with the open sea. Most islands rise only slightly above the water, with sandy shores, coconut palms, and seagrass beds forming a landscape shaped closely by the surrounding ocean.
