Syria

Syria lies at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, where a narrow coastal plain rises into mountain ranges running parallel to the sea. Inland, the landscape opens into broad plains and dry steppe, crossed in the east by the Euphrates River. Fertile valleys and Mediterranean hills give way to the Syrian Desert, while the Orontes and Khabur rivers shape other parts of the country.
