The Northern Mariana Islands form a north–south chain of 14 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are the largest inhabited islands in the south, where raised limestone terraces meet coral reefs and sandy coves. Farther north, steep volcanic islands rise from deep ocean waters, with the Mariana Trench running along the eastern side of the archipelago.
