Tunisia lies in North Africa, where a long Mediterranean coastline gives way to hills, plains, and the Sahara. The Atlas Mountains reach into the north and west, while the eastern coast includes broad plains, lagoons, and the Gulf of Gabès. Farther south, salt lakes such as Chott el Jerid sit between rocky plateaus, oases, and the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental.
