About
Mayotte lies in the Mozambique Channel in the western Indian Ocean and is formed by two main volcanic islands, Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre, along with smaller islets. A broad lagoon, enclosed by an extensive barrier reef, surrounds much of the archipelago. Grande-Terre has steep hills and deeply cut valleys, while Petite-Terre includes the circular crater lake of Dziani Dzaha.
