Greece lies in southeastern Europe, where a mountainous mainland extends into the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean seas. The Pindus Mountains cross much of the country, while narrow peninsulas and deeply indented coastlines shape the land. Thousands of islands lie offshore, including Crete, Euboea, Rhodes, and the Cyclades, and Mount Olympus rises in the north.
