Heard Island and McDonald Islands

Heard Island and the McDonald Islands lie in the southern Indian Ocean, in a remote subantarctic setting. Heard Island is dominated by the glaciated Big Ben massif, whose summit, Mawson Peak, is an active volcano, while steep valleys descend towards narrow beaches. The smaller McDonald Islands are also volcanic, with bare rock, sea cliffs, and surrounding waters shaped by strong winds and waves.
