What is a monsoon?

A monsoon is a seasonal change in the prevailing wind and the rainfall pattern that follows it. The word is often used as shorthand for torrential rain, but a downpour is not a monsoon by itself. The monsoon is the broader circulation that transports moisture across a region for part of the year and often produces a much drier season when that circulation changes.

The best-known example is the South Asian monsoon, but monsoon circulations also affect East and Southeast Asia, West Africa, northern Australia, southwestern North America and much of tropical South America. They differ in scale, timing and behaviour. Some bring long periods of widespread rain. Others favour scattered afternoon thunderstorms. A useful definition must leave room for those regional differences.

Why monsoons form

Land and ocean respond differently to seasonal heating. A continent can warm and cool faster than the neighbouring sea, changing the distribution of temperature and pressure across a large area. The zone of strongest tropical heating and rising air also shifts with the seasons. Together, these changes reorganise the pressure gradients and prevailing winds.

During the wet phase of many monsoons, the circulation draws humid air from a warm ocean toward land. As that air rises, it cools and water vapour condenses into clouds and rain. Coastlines and mountain ranges can focus the ascent, so windward slopes may receive far more rain than nearby valleys or areas on the sheltered side of the terrain.

This land-sea contrast is only part of the mechanism. The position of the monsoon trough, the movement of the tropical rain belt, winds higher in the atmosphere, sea-surface temperatures and the shape of the land all matter. The Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas strongly influence the Asian circulation, for example, but neither acts as a simple switch that turns the monsoon on.

The dry phase begins as the seasonal pressure pattern changes and the prevailing flow weakens or reverses. In much of South Asia, winds from the continental interior carry less moisture and produce drier weather. That rule has important exceptions. Northeasterly flow can cross the Bay of Bengal and bring the main rainy season to southeastern India and northeastern Sri Lanka.

Onset, withdrawal and monsoon breaks

A monsoon does not arrive everywhere on one day. Its onset is the establishment of a new circulation and a sustained change in rainfall, not the first heavy shower of the season. National weather services use combinations of rainfall, wind and atmospheric conditions to declare onset. The circulation then advances across the region, sometimes quickly and sometimes in fits and starts.

Withdrawal is also gradual. Winds, humidity and rainfall shift over time as the seasonal circulation retreats. A late storm does not necessarily mean the monsoon is still active, just as an early storm does not prove it has begun.

Even during the wet season, rain is not continuous. Monsoons alternate between active spells and breaks:

  • Active spell: Moist flow and rising air strengthen, bringing more widespread cloud, rain and thunderstorms.
  • Break: The monsoon trough weakens or moves, and rainfall decreases across part of the region. Other areas can become wetter at the same time.

These changes can last for days or longer. Tropical disturbances and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, a slow-moving pattern of enhanced and suppressed tropical rainfall, can help organise them. This is why a seasonal rainfall total tells you little about the weather on a particular afternoon.

The main monsoon regions

South Asia

The summer circulation carries moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal across the Indian subcontinent. Terrain strongly redistributes the rain. The Western Ghats, the Himalayas and regional hill ranges lift moist air, while some leeward areas remain much drier. Monsoon depressions and other low-pressure systems can deliver prolonged heavy rain well inland.

East and Southeast Asia

Here the monsoon interacts with fronts, subtropical high-pressure systems and tropical cyclones. The wet season does not look the same from southern China to Japan, the Philippines or mainland Southeast Asia. A shift in one part of the circulation can move the main rain belt without producing the same effect across the whole region.

West Africa

Seasonal southwesterly flow carries Atlantic moisture inland as the tropical rain belt moves north. The circulation helps set the wet season across the Gulf of Guinea and the Sahel. How far the rain belt advances, and how long it remains active, has major consequences for water supply and agriculture.

North America

The North American monsoon affects northwestern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. A seasonal circulation change draws moisture into the region and supports thunderstorms, often later in the day. The rain is uneven: one community may receive a damaging downpour while another nearby stays dry. Flash flooding, lightning, dust storms and strong outflow winds can all accompany these storms.

South America and northern Australia

Both regions have Southern Hemisphere monsoon systems. Across tropical South America, the summer circulation helps organise the continent’s broad wet season. In northern Australia, active monsoon phases bring humid northwesterly flow, widespread cloud and heavy rain, while break phases are less wet and more prone to isolated showers or storms.

Why one monsoon season differs from another

Monsoon rainfall varies from year to year because the atmosphere and oceans never begin a season in exactly the same state. Forecasters monitor several influences:

  • sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific and Indian oceans
  • the position and strength of large-scale pressure systems
  • the Madden-Julian Oscillation and other tropical waves
  • soil moisture, snow cover and land temperatures
  • tropical depressions and cyclones
  • shorter-lived weather patterns within the season

El Niño and La Niña, together known as ENSO, can shift the odds of wetter or drier conditions in some monsoon regions. El Niño is often associated with below-average Indian summer monsoon rainfall, while La Niña often favours more rain. Neither outcome is guaranteed. Some El Niño seasons finish near or above average, and rainfall can vary sharply within a country even when the national total looks ordinary.

ENSO also affects monsoons differently by region and season. Conditions in the Indian Ocean, including the Indian Ocean Dipole, can reinforce or offset part of its influence. Seasonal outlooks therefore describe probabilities, not a fixed result for every place.

Benefits and hazards

Monsoon rain replenishes rivers, reservoirs, groundwater and soils. Farms, hydropower systems and cities across the tropics depend on it. Too little rain can reduce harvests and water supplies, while a delayed onset can disrupt planting even if the final seasonal total recovers.

Too much rain in too little time can cause river flooding, flash floods and landslides. Saturated ground increases the risk of slope failure, and repeated storms can keep rivers high long after rain has stopped locally. Thunderstorms may also bring lightning, hail and damaging winds. A break in the rain can introduce a different hazard by allowing heat to build.

The word monsoon on a forecast does not describe the risk at your exact location. Check the expected rainfall, thunderstorm timing and any official weather warnings. Never walk or drive into floodwater, and remember that conditions can change upstream before they change where you are.

How to read a monsoon forecast

Short-range forecasts estimate the weather for a specific place and time. They are the right tool for planning a journey, outdoor work or a day in the city. Look at the chance and timing of rain, not only a daily weather icon. During a monsoon break, hot or humid conditions can matter as much as rainfall, so compare temperature, humidity and wind as well.

Seasonal outlooks answer a different question. They estimate whether rainfall over a broad region is more likely to finish above, near or below its usual range. They cannot tell you whether one neighbourhood will flood or whether a particular day will stay dry.
